Pub Quiz Challenge

Introduction

On the back of my voluntary work with elderly folk, I found it a fun idea to have a challenge in care homes, whereby teams representing the staff and residents took part in quizzes against each other. I wanted to make the questions suitable for the residents’ age groups.

While introducing folk to the quiz idea, I thought it useful to give a list of questions which give an idea of the likely difficulty:

  1. Who was the US president during World War II? Roosevelt
  2. Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler were characters in which film? Gone with the Wind
  3. What did Cassius Clay change his name to? Muhammed Ali
  4. How many degrees are there in a circle? 360
  5. What is the collective noun for cows? Herd
  6. Which English city is associated with William Shakespeare? Stratford-upon-Avon
  7. Who did Jean Alexander play in Coronation Street? Hilda Ogden
  8. Which football team plays at Anfield? Liverpool
  9. In politics, who was the iron lady? Margaret Thatcher
  10. What is the capital city of Spain? Madrid
  11. Who was Queen Elizabeth II’s father? George VI
  12. Who was your favourite James Bond actor? No correct answer!!!

A suitable prize for the winners should be decided in advance. 😀

Questions

I put together a spreadsheet of questions I felt suitable for my target audience, which could be used as a base for developing an alternative set of questions. For easy access, I also include PDFs based on the spreadsheet which show the questions with answers and the questions with a blank space for answers. The latter could be printed out for use in a quiz at a care home.

There are numerous web sites which provide countless pages of quiz questions, the following links direct to some of those which I personally found useful.

Depending on the amount of preparation time available, and whether there’ll be access to a single large screen / projector for the participants, it may be helpful to print out a list of questions and answers in advance.

Documents

During every round, each group of participants (staff or residents) would fill in a quiz sheet. When the quiz ends, scores would be tallied up on a score register. If so desired, the quiz sheets could be changed to suit the purpose – I’ve included the Excel spreadsheet I used to create them.

Initial Letter Challenge Quiz

During the 2020 / 2021 Covid-19 pandemic I created a set of initial letter quiz questions, which I handed out to the folk in my street – it drove some of them nuts. 😀 By way of example, for the question “8 L on an O”, the correct answer would be “8 Legs on an Octopus.”
