Introduction
Staffordshire oatcakes (also named Potteries oatcakes) are savoury pancakes made from oatmeal, flour and yeast. They’re a local speciality in the North Staffordshire area of England, where they’re cooked on a griddle. This page serves as a register of oatcake shops in the Potteries and surrounding areas in July 2024; only shops where the oatcakes are cooked on the premises are considered worthy of inclusion here.
There’s no basis to the order of outlets in the register below, and since I’ve had no sense of taste since 2015 there’s certainly no preference for flavour. 😋 The characters superimposed on the map image below reference specific shops in the register.

From Oatcakes to Caviar
I was a good friend of a retired senior construction engineer named Roy Smith, who was a fascinating individual. On his life journey he happened to engage with Stanley Matthews, Gordon Banks, Oliver Reed, Roger Bannister, Field Marshal Montgomery, Idi Amin, Fidel Castro, Colonel Gadaffi, Ava Gardner, Ingrid Bergman, Princess Diana and Prince Phillip… among others. Roy wrote a published book entitled “From Oatcakes to Caviar” which is downloadable in PDF format from the page opened by clicking the link; the page also contains transcribed material from conversations about his celebrity lifestyle. 🙂

Anecdotes
In many people’s oatcake reviews they’ll confidently assert that such and such oatcakes are definitely the best. I ponder how folk can express such certainty given how they’ll maybe have eaten no more than five or ten different oatcakes.
Many shops had curious names, amongst those which have sadly deceased are Oatcake Heaven, Bob on Oatcakes and The Oatcake Coral.

- W3W is endorsed by breakdown and emergency services. An example of use might be upon breaking down in a remote country lane, whereby a voice call would be made to breakdown services. Using W3W enables communication of the precise location.
- W3W can be useful when planning driving in foreign countries, where determining destination street names / town names for entry into navigation devices can be challenging.
